PASTOR'S WELCOME
MAY DAY, MAY DAY, MAY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!
OR NOT???
A MAYDAY situation is on in which a vessel, aircraft, vehicle or person is in grave and imminent danger and requires immediate assistance. Examples of " grave and imminent danger" in which a mayday call would be appropriate include fire, explosion or sinking.
Mayday calls can be made on any frequency, and when a mayday call is made no other radio traffic is permitted except to assist in the emergency. A mayday call may only be made when life or craft is in imminent danger of death or destruction.
Making a hoax mayday call is a criminal act in many countries because of the danger to the rescuers' lives that a search and rescue operation can create as well as the very high cost of such rescue efforts. For example, making a false distress call in the US is a federal crime carrying sanctions of up to six years imprisonment and a fine of $250,000.00.
This May we are being bombarded by a culture which is crying mayday. The truth, for people of faith, is that every crisis presents us with opportunity. There are clearly many opportunities in this month of May! It is the first time, I remember that both Mother's Day and Pentecost fall on the same day, May 11th. These two days are a mixture of crisis and opportunity. They can be viewed as a crisis because Mothers preparing to give birth need all the help which can be given, to nourish children and train them up in the ways of the Lord. Remember the people of Israel in captivity asking, "How can we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?" An yet, they sing praises to God which, eventually, gave way to their return to the Promise Land where the captives were liberated!
Like those who have gone before us, we march, by faith-- forward through teh ages.
Pentecost is a time for new birth! It is celebration of the Holy Spirit's coming upon the disciples. Acts Chapter 2 &4 tell this sacred story. All the believers had everything in common and God's Spirit came upon them with awesome power.
May it to be so for us this May. The crime of our false doubts is about to be forgiven by the God of Hope who breathes upon us the breath of life and makes us living beings.
Bless you on this MAYDAY and throughout this month of May!
Sincerely,
Ken
